Grizzly Peak Preserve Cultural History

Old Hinge on Cattle Corral Gate
Old Hinge on Cattle Corral Gate

Southern Oregon has a rich human history, as does the land within the Grizzly Peak Preserve.  Native American archeological sites and remnants of past homesteads established by early settlers begin to tell some of these stories — but many specific details about the people, activities, and events that influenced this area have been lost through the years.

In an attempt to honor the cultural relationship with this landscape, we plan to research and document the historical events and Euro-American settlement of the Grizzly Peak Preserve. Chronicling the area’s human history will help us understand how the past has influenced the preserve’s biological values and in turn inform future research and stewardship activities.
